The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the Komen Foundation with its Affiliate Network is able to fund breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards, and community outreach programs.
Since its origination in Dallas, Texas, in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a national series of more than 100 Races with over 1.5 million people expected to participate in 2004. Up to 75 percent of the net proceeds raised by the Greater Nashville Race for the Cure® stays in middle Tennessee to fund outreach programs and initiatives that address the specific unmet breast health needs of our community, and a minimum of 25 percent of net proceeds raised supports the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program.
Owen typically has 40 students participate in this event each year!
