How do I determine an appropriate salary for internships?
Rates of compensation vary greatly according to industry, geography, and job function. You can find detailed salary guidelines in the Employment Report. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call and talk with an Owen Career Management Center (CMC) staff member.

If I can’t afford to pay interns, can students work for course credit?
Students can work on internships during the school year for course credit if the company first contacts the Owen Project Director, Professor Bruce Lynskey, with a proposal and the project parameters. Professor Lynskey (or another Owen faculty member) will monitor the project. This arrangement does not apply to summer internships that earn no course credit.

How do I hire an international student for an internship?
Internships are an especially good way to hire Vanderbilt MBA international students. Their cultural knowledge and language skills are invaluable resources in a global marketplace. Most international students hold F-1 visas and are eligible for short-term employment in the United States (up to 12 to 15 months) in conjunction with their academic program. Just one letter to us begins the process.

How long is the typical internship?
Internships can last anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks but are negotiable with the student and are not mandated by the school to be any particular length.

My company has never hired interns before. How do I begin the process?
Give us a call. We will walk you through the process of submitting a job description, collecting résumés, scheduling interviews, and formulating compensation.

I’m not ready to begin the recruiting process but would like to look at résumés. How do I receive the résumés for a particular class of Vanderbilt MBAs, EMBAs, or MS Finance students?
We provide employers with a complimentary link to our online résumé books, which allow you to search résumés of students seeking employment.

How willing are students to relocate for summer internships?
Most of our students accept opportunities outside of Nashville. Students are looking for the right experience or opportunity and will relocate as needed to take advantage of a great opportunity.

Do companies usually provide housing or a housing allowance?
Infrequently, companies will provide housing allowances, but it is up to the individual company to decide what it will offer.

My project won’t turn into a full-time project. Will students still be interested?
Yes. We have students who work on temporary projects and students who continue with a company after graduation. In either case, students are looking for a meaningful project with a clearly defined scope and deliverable for the summer regardless of full-time possibilities (although they’d love to work full-time).

I have a job that requires very specific experience and want to see only candidates who have that experience. How can you help me identify candidates?
Owen is an intimate community, and our CMC is familiar with our students’ career paths and skills. This benefits you when you need us to help you identify students with very specific work experience. For example, we’ll forward résumés to you electronically for your review based on your criteria. You can then follow up directly with students, or we can arrange for you to come to campus.
