The Vanderbilt PhD Program is designed to equip the student to carry out original research in a field of his or her choice. PhD students learn to critically evaluate current management models, become proficient in advanced analytical techniques, and gain experience developing new research topics.
One of the strengths of the doctoral program at Owen is the student-faculty relationship; students interact one-on-one with faculty members who share similar research interests. They also participate in seminars with nationally known researchers and instructors. The small size of the program and the location of doctoral student offices near Management Hall ensure the frequent, informal contact between students and faculty that is essential to scholarship.
At the time of admission, the PhD Program staff identifies a faculty member to serve as advisor for a student's program of study. The advisor helps the student select coursework and research activities that are directed toward the student's chosen research area. The student may later change advisors as their dissertation research interests evolve. These apprentice relationships provide unique development opportunities for the student hoping to make a significant contribution in his or her chosen field.
