Advanced Product Design & Development

Course Description:
This course is intended for students with career interests in fields related to product (or service) design, development, and assessment. Students in the class work in teams performing advanced development work on new product project ideas submitted by local businesses or as initiated by the students themselves. Topics to be formally discussed include product planning, market research, user testing, prototype development, cost analysis, and manufacturing strategy among others. To help meet both normative and exploration goals for the course, one course period each week will be devoted to lectures, discussions, and presentations by the professor and invited guests, while the other class period will be devoted to the student projects in the form of brainstorm meetings, progress reports, and hands-on work.
Prerequisite: 541a and Consent of the instructor.
