Leadership Development

Realizing your potential to lead

With the Owen Leadership Development Program (LDP), you will step up your leadership potential and increase your value to recruiters. Owen has identified the skills that will differentiate you as a 21st-century leader and give you the tools you need to develop those skills, giving you a head start with staying power.

The Owen Way:
Your Personal High-Potential Development Plan

As a Vanderbilt MBA student, here is what you will do to develop the leadership skills you need and recruiters desire:

Create your own personal development plan. Start with an in-depth assessment, uncovering your strengths and targeting areas for improvement. You will have access to best-in-class tools for assessment, based on our unique partnerships with both Hogan Assessments and Korn/Ferry International. You will have the support of both our network of Executive Coaches and LDP staff to help you convert your assessment data into your own, tailored developmental path.

Experience leadership development as part of the MBA curriculum.
Projects and learning labs will provide repeated opportunities for you to stretch, grow your leadership abilities and then leverage the learning from those experiences through a cycle of real-time feedback, reflection and self-correction.

Choose from additional LDP-provided experiences and resources to execute your development plan. Select from a variety of workshops, quick feedback tools, online resources and interactions with executives to help you master the skills in your personal development plan.

In your second year, you can choose to expand your abilities even further with a selection of challenging leadership experiences.

In the end, you will have a compelling personal development story to share with recruiters: your own personal plan for development, how you tackled it and the evidence of your growth.

The Owen Leadership Model

At Owen, we believe that effective leaders must accomplish three important things:

  1. Create the new and different.
  2. Figure out how to get it done.
  3. Engage others to help get it done.
Accomplishing these things requires a combination of Strategic, Operating and Personal/Interpersonal Skills; what we refer to as the SOP Model of Leadership.

With LDP, you will learn about specific skills in each area that give you a competitive advantage among your peers. These skills are based on premier research-based and experience-tested tools from Hogan Assessments and Korn/Ferry International.

I really enjoyed being a part of the LDP Executive Coaching Program. Before the start of the program we asked former colleagues and fellow students to fill out a 360 feedback survey, which asked them to evaluate us based on our leadership styles and competencies. Interested students were paired up with executive coaches to work on areas they felt they needed to strengthen in order to be a successful leader in the workplace. Being in Investment Banking, one has to manage many different constituencies and lead complex projects. Therefore, being self-aware and knowing where my “de-railers” are will help strengthen my leadership skills and achieve my goal of moving up in the financial industry.
